Drinking This Has Helped Me

In the few past weeks, I had taken a nutrition course at John Hall Studios, where I learned about all about the way that food affects your body, positively and negatively. I also learned about benefits of drinking lemon water. Now, I’ve seen this information floating around Pinterest and Facebook before, but I have always ignored it because there are so many fad things or fad diets happening on the internet.

Here are some of the benefits of drinking lemon water:

1. Helps With Digestion

When I first wake up in the morning, I’ve noticed that I have the most issues with digestion or bloating around that time. Lemon water has helped me with this. Drinking warm lemon water, first thing in the morning can aid in flushing the digestive system and rehydrate the body. It is considered a diuretic. A diuretic is anything — food, drink, or medicine — that increases the flow of urine.

Lemon water can also assist in helping you to become regular (regulate your bowel movements…I know, TMI). Lemons contain pectin fiber, which is very beneficial for colon health. The citric acid in lemons helps to maximize enzyme function, which stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification.

2. Immune System Boost

This probably should have been number one, only because I hate getting sick. I live in the midwest region, which means freezing cold temperatures until about May or June. Freezing cold temperatures mean that people are sick more often and spreading germs. Also, having a very busy seven-year-old boy can assist in the high germ productions. My point is that it can be hard to avoid sickness in the winter months.

Lemons contain Vitamin C and Potassium. The amount of Vitamin C isn’t like how it is with Oranges, but it still is very beneficial.

Lemons: 30.7 mg vs Oranges: 51.1 mg

The act of drinking lemon water first thing in the morning gives the body a chance to absorb these vitamins effectively and can provide an immune boost.

3. Metabolism Boost

If you’re like me and work out regularly, you already know the importance of having a fast metabolism. Drinking lemon water in the morning, before eating anything, gets your system moving and your metabolism ignited. Having a fast metabolism means that your body can quickly turn fat into bioavailable energy. People with fast metabolisms do not have to worry as much about running out of juice when working out.

An increased metabolic rate means that your body burns more calories and store less fat. Also, the juice of the lemon can assist in slowing down the rate of starch digestion, which aids in keeping the blood sugar balanced. This prevents spikes in insulin.

4. Beautiful Skin

Looking good without makeup is very important to me. Makeup is just not necessary all of the time (ie: the gym, running errands, etc). Having a good skincare routine is key to having glowy, dewy, nice skin underneath the makeup.

Due to the high antioxidant content in lemon water, the chances getting of wrinkles and acne are greatly reduced. The Vitamin C assists with the body’s natural collagen production for smooth, healthy skin. Lemon water purges toxins from your blood, which means that it keeps your skin clear of blemishes from the inside out.

Balances PH Levels

For those who care about alkaline foods, this is for you. Yes, I am familiar with the alkaline versus non-alkaline arguments so well. I am pro-alkaline. Lemons happen to be one of the most alkalizing foods for the body. Outside of the body, lemon juice is acidic. Inside the body, after its minerals dissociate, its effect is alkalizing. So, lemon juice is both acidic and alkalizing.

It also detoxifies and alkalizes acidic conditions seen in many diseases ailing people today (ex: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, degenerative arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, gout, diabetes type II, multiple sclerosis, digestive disorders, allergies, chronic fatigue).

Do you benefit from drinking lemon water? Let me know in the comments.
